The Mathematical approach

Fieldscale software uses an integral equation approach to model electromagnetic effects. The equation is discretized and solved using the Method-of-Moments (MoM). The integral equation is chosen according to the specifics of the problem so as to produce well-conditioned matrices.

 

The Science behind the Machine

Fieldscale solves the Boundary Element Method (BEM) matrix. The iterative solver is accelerated with the Fast Multipole Method (FMM) and enhanced with a block diagonal preconditioner to guarantee convergence.

The implementation of the FMM gains an advantage in both shared memory multicore and distributed memory systems using the TBB library and MPI protocols. The iterative solver achieves linear time and memory complexity.

 

Scalable Algorithms for Big Simulations

The direct solver is based on a novel implementation of Hierarchically Semi-Separable (HSS) matrices. It achieves linear memory complexity and O(N^1.5) time complexity. It is accelerated in shared memory systems using OpenMP, while it gains full advantage of OpenBLAS.
